Authorities initially said the 21-year-old victim had died from his injuries, but later said he remained alive, though gravely injured.
He was shot in the head and body at about 12:25 a.m. at Marathon station in the 1200 block of West 59th Street, police said.
Police said the gunman had quarreled with the victim at the gas station, only to leave and return in a white SUV. From the front passenger's window, the gunman opened fire, striking the man multiple times.
A police spokesman said the victim wasn't a gas station employee. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
The SUV, with a female drivers behind the wheel, fled the scene.
UPDATE: Terance Franklin, 22, of the 5900 block of South Aberdeen Street was pronounced dead at 2:52 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.
