The incident began at about 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 2500 block of South Pulaski Road in the city's Little Village neighborhood
The 24-year-old victim was shot at least three times in the chest when four men wearing ski masks tried to steal his gray 2000 Nissan sedan.
The attackers then threw the man in the trunk and drove through at least two neighborhoods with him inside.
Somehow, the man was able to open the trunk near the area of Arthington Street and Pulaski Road and jumped to safety. His captors, apparently unaware that he had gotten away, continued driving north on Pulaski.
The victim, who wore a Pepsi company uniform, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said. Despite his condition, police said the man was able to speak with police.
Police later located the victim's car on fire -- apparently torched -- in a garage in the 4100 block of West Harrison Street, just south of the Eisenhower Expressway
