Five of six people in the car were seriously hurt, including three children.
Engine No. 62 was southbound on Halsted Street with its lights and sirens activated, on its way to a call of a fire alarm nearby.
They saw a car stop as they approached 128th Place.
“They assumed it was stopped for them,’. But for an unknown reason, the car started moving again and the engine could not stop in time – broadsiding the passenger’s side of the mid-size car.
The car was left mangled and “caved in’’ on its passenger side from the wreck, which happened at 6:23 p.m.
Three children under the age of 15 and two young adults were initially trapped inside but were rescued. They were all taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The driver, a man about 18, was later taken by ambulance to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in fair condition.
Meanwhile all four fire department members, including a lieutenant, manning the engine were slightly hurt during the impact. They were taken in good condition to Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island.
Police are investigating to learn more about the motorist’s actions and why the car “started up again’’ and went in front of the engine
