A 27-year-old man was fatally shot as he stood with his girlfriend in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the city's South Side.
Killed was Victory Island, of the 7000 block of South Chappel Avenue.
The shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 9900 block of South Carpenter Street.
Island was standing on the street with his girlfriend when he received a call on her cell phone.
Soon afterwards, two hooded gunmen emerged from a nearby gangway, firing shots that struck the man multiple times in the body and at least once in the head.
The girlfriend wasn't injured.
While police believe a drug transaction occurred, or was planned during the phone call, it wasn't clear whether the call was somehow connected to the murder.
