A Chicago police officer is being credited this morning with saving the life of a choking infant.
Officer Christopher Elliott, a four-year-veteran, was in his patrol car at a gas station at California and Diversey avenues about 10:30 p.m., filling out an accident report from an earlier incident, when a man ran up to him yelling for help.
Elliott ran to the man's nearbby vehicle where he found an unresponsive 15-month-old boy with his mother.
"I grabbed the baby and saw it was choking," Elliott said. "I began tapping it on the back and as I was tapping it, the baby started to vomit out some food."
The baby then started to cough, cry and breathe, Elliott said.
By the time paramedics called by Elliott arrived, the baby seemingly was in good shape.
The child was taken by paramedics to Children's Memorial Hospital where he was reported this morning in good condition.
