Two armed men walked into the First American Bank on the Far Southwest Side this morning, announced a robbery, jumped over the counter and cleaned out several teller drawers, according to the FBI.
But a dye pack mixed in with the cash exploded shortly after they ran out of the branch at 11821 S. Western Ave. in the Morgan park neighborhood.
Undeterred, the two jumped into a car and sped off, but collided with a garbage truck just blocks away, the FBI said.
Witnesses told agents the robbers kept driving after the crash and were last seen heading east on 116th Street.
The robbers were described as black, in their early 30s and wearing dark clothing. One of the robbers had a long black and gray beard, the other had a short black beard.
Anyone with any information about the robbery should call the Chicago office of the FBI at (312) 421-6700 or any local law enforcement agency.
