A suspect who turned himself into police later in the evening is in custody and charges are pending.
The victim was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office this morning as Curtis Connor, of the 500 block of North Leamington Avenue.
Connor was in the alley behind his residence about 4 p.m. when he saw a neighbor backing his car into a garage and walked up to him, asking about the health of a relative who had been ill.
A witness working in the alley told police he heard the man in the car tell Connor, "Don't walk up on me like that," and, for some unexplained reason, took out a handgun and, still from his car, shot Connor in the chest.
The neighbor, who lives on the next block over from Connor, then drove off, but at 7:30 p.m. turned himself in.
