Cops: Teen in fatal accident was drunk and high on Ecstasy

A 16-year-old boy was drunk and high on Ecstasy when he allegedly stole a car in the Old Town neighborhood, leading to a traffic crash about a mile away that killed a Chicago police dispatcher returning home from her shift, prosecutors said today.
Marquis Harrison, of the 200 block of
South Lotus Avenue
, was charged as an adult with one count of first-degree murder and felony burglary. He was also charged with misdemeanor DUI, running a stop sign and speeding. His bond was set at $1 million today by Judge Jackie Portman.
Authorities said the teen was driving a stolen Range Rover at 6:15 a.m. Sunday and was being chased by police when he plowed into a car driven by Marciea Adkins, a veteran police dispatcher on her way home after working the overnight shift. The crash took place near Hoyne and Armitage Avenues.
Harrison drank vodka, took ecstasy and smoked marijuana at a party before he saw a motorist get out of the Range Rover, Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Costello said.  Harrison jumped into the running vehicle and sped off, “committing numerous traffic violations,” Costello said. Harrison jumped into the SUV at
150 West North Avenue
, police said.
A Chicago police officer saw the Range Rover run a red light at

backed into the officer’s squad car and almost ran over two other officers, according police and prosecutors. Harrison fled north, winding up on Hoyne, where he struck Adkins as she drove west on Armitage, police said.
Harrison was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where a preliminary blood test showed his blood-alcohol content was 0.186 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Costello said. Test results for narcotics were still pending, he said.
Harrison is a sophomore at Urban Prep Charter Academy in Garfield Park, where he is the quarterback of the football team and a “very bright student,” according to Assistant Principal Ron Bryant.
Costello said Harrison has two juvenile convictions in Kane County, both for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
The lanky teen appeared in court in a maroon T-shirt and blue sweat pants. He kept his head bowed as prosecutors detailed the allegations.
Also today, officials at the Office of Emergency Managment and Communications announced the establishment of a memorial fund to help Adkins' family.
Woman dies after being shot in head on Southeast Side
A young woman died this morning after being shot in the head Sunday night in a shooting on the city's Southeast Side, authorities said.
Holly Hieber, 26, was declared dead at 10:48 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. A "person of interest" was being questioned in her slaying, said Chicago Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.
Police say the woman was with several people inside a garage in the 11100 block of
South Ewing Avenue
at about 9:17 p.m., police said. Early reports of a gray-colored vehicle pulling up and fired several shots before fleeing the scene appear to be unfounded, but detectives were still trying to determine what happened, Ursitti said
