A boy jumped into the Chicago River from the Michigan Avenue Bridge in an apparent stunt late this afternoon, a sergeant from the Chicago Police Marine Unit said.
Police responded to a call at about 5:30 p.m. reporting that a person was getting ready to jump.
By the time they arrived, a boy between 13 and 15 years of age was climbing out of the cold water. surrounded by a group of laughing youths.
“When they saw the light they were running like rabbits,” Marine Unit Sgt. Jim Van Vranken said. “They were just horsing around. One kid jumped in on a dare.”
Van Vranken estimated 10 or 15 boys watched from the bridge. No arrests were made.
