A man caught this week robbing a victim at knifepoint has been charged with various crimes, including a series of robberies of tow truck drivers, police said tonight.
The pattern of attacks against tow truck drivers caused police to put out an investigative alert, and "a mission was put in place" involving Calumet Area Robbery/Burglary/Theft Detectives, South Chicago District Tactical Officers and the Chicago Police Organized Crime Division, police said in a news release late Friday.
On Wednesday, police watching the 8000 block of South Kingston Avenue saw a man in the act of robbing a victim at knifepoint in an alley, and after a short foot chase arrested Bobby Simms, 22, of the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue.
After he was identified by the victim, police said, Simms led officers to where he dropped the proceeds of the crime.
Further investigation revealed three outstanding warrants, and detectives were able to link Simms to the tow truck driver robberies as well, police said. He was identified by several of those victims too.
Simms is facing multiple felony counts of armed robbery and various other charges, including unlawful use of a weapon, domestic battery, telephone harassment and contempt of court.
He is scheduled in bond court Saturday.
