Police officer injured in hit-and-run

Chicago police this morning were holding a motorist who they said struck a police officer after turning to avoid a traffic safety check and then took off.

The officer, assigned to the Near North police district, was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck by a Jaguar at about 2:10 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Sheffield Avenue in the city's Goose Island neighborhood, police said. The collision occurred in an area home to several trendy night clubs.

The officer, who WGN-TV said was a 19-year department veteran, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his legs, police said.

The unidentified motorist then fled the scene, but was caught after a police chase in the 3000 block of South Princeton Avenue, more than five miles away.
Police appear to have fired shots.
"We're not sure if he (the motorist) was shot. He was injured, but that could be from the shattered (car) window," said Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police who was on the scene.
Charges hadn't yet been filed, police said
