A multi-alarm fire was called for an apartment building in the Uptown neighborhood on the North Side when a man used a lighter to look for something under a mattress and the mattress caught fire.
At 4:45 a.m., fire personnel responded to a fire at Wilson Windsor Apartments at 915 W. Wilson Ave, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Larry Langford.
The fire occurred on the third floor in apartment 314, Langford said. A 2-11 alarm and EMS Plan 1 were called for the fire, Langford said.
A 57-year-old man was looking for something under a mattress and used a lighter to help him see. The mattress caught fire and spread, causing extensive damage to the apartment, Langford said.
The man suffered some smoke inhalation and was transported to Weiss Memorial Hospital where he was listed in good condition, Langford said.
Three other people were treated and released on the scene, he said.
The fire was contained to the third floor and there was no serious structural damage to the building, he said. All smoke detectors were working
