Railroad officials this morning discovered the remains of a person who appeared to have been struck by a freight train on the city's Southwest Side, officials said.
Employees with Belt Railway found the body of the severely-injured victim around 11:30 a.m. near the tracks on railroad property near the 6600 block of South Kenton Avenue in the city's West Lawn neighborhood, according to Chicago police and railroad officials.
Police believe the victim was struck within two hours of the body being discovered, according to a police spokesman.
Authorities believe the victim was a male, but were unsure of the victim’s race or age due to the extent of the injuries. Railroad officials had turned over the investigation to police, said Timothy Coffey, general counsel, secretary and director of human resources for the railroad.
It wasn’t clear whether the collision occurred because of an accident or suicide.
