In June 2008, more than 30 dogs were recovered from Larue Jackson's home, and the 52-year-old later pleaded guilty to various animal-related crimes. This time he has been charged with twelve counts of neglect of owner’s duties and two counts of cruel treatment.
Police began investigating him after receiving a tip that he was holding dogfights in his basement and owned pit bulls in need of veterinary care, according to a statement from the department.
After conducting surveillance, police executed a search warrant on Jackson's home in the 7100 block of South Oakley Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood on May 26.
"In the basement police found 10 pit bulls in wire cages, without food or water, housed in unsanitary conditions," the statement said. "Another two pit bulls were discovered in Jackson's garage."
The dogs had scars on their faces, chests and legs consistent with dogfighting, according to police. One dog had fresh wounds on its face. The animals were taken into the custody of the Chicago Commission on Animal Care and Control.
In the 2008 case, 32 dogs -- including 10 puppies -- were seized from the Oakley address. The dogs were housed in stacked cages in the basement and showed signs of being involved in fights. Police found dogfighting paraphernalia, including a jaw-strengthening device, animal hides used to foster bloodlust in the dogs and medicinal materials such as syringes and penicillin
