A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized early this morning after being shot while standing on his back porch in the Gage Park neighborhood, police said.
The boy had just stepped out of his home on the 5100 block of South Albany Avenue when the shooting happened about 1 a.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
The boy's older brother had celebrated his 20th birthday on Sunday and was with several of his friends in the backyard behind the home. The 14-year-old went out onto the porch to join them, police said.
But before the boy could step off the porch, a dark gray van pulled up to the corner behind the home, police said.
After stopping, a male got out of the van and walked toward the group and began shooting, Kubiak said. After the firing, the shooter got back into the van and drove west to Kedzie Avenue, Kubiak said.
Witnesses said they also noticed a white van in the area but police are still investigating whether that vehicle was involved, police said.
The boy told police that he felt pain in his leg where he discovered he had been shot. He sustained a gun shot wound to his lower left leg, Kubiak said.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition had stabilized, police said.
