After 22 years, now he's former Mayor Daley

Richard Daley pounded the City Council gavel for the last time Monday morning and quietly turned the reins of Chicago government over to Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Joined onstage by wife Maggie for Emanuel's swearing-in at Millennium Park, Daley got a standing ovatation from the crowd.

He called the City Council to order and administered the opening formalities of the inauguration ceremony.

Then, after 22 years, Daley sat back and watched his administration come to an end as Emanuel took the oath of office.

"Nobody ever loved Chicago more or served it better than Richard Daley," Emanuel said in his speech.

Daley listened, with an occasional whisper in his wife's ear, as Emanuel outlined a list of city problems the new administration would face.

After the ceremony, the 69-year-old former mayor and his wife walked offstage together as Emanuel accepted congratulations. The Daley family, including brothers John and William, watched from the crowd. They planned a low-key party for after the swearing-in.

"Rich adjusts well," said John Daley, a Cook County commissioner. "He's not going to undergo any shock out there, whatsoever. He'll go on with his life and live accordingly."

William Daley, who replaced Emanuel as President Barack Obama's chief of staff, said his brother has not announced what he will do in civilian life but is looking forward to new challenges.

"He's unbelievably proud — as our whole family is — of what he's accomplished, not only the last 22 years, but his entire professional and personal life. And that will continue," William Daley said. "It's not the end."
