Responding to a call of shots fired near a West Pullman neighborhood elementary school Wednesday afternoon, police arrested a 15-year-old gang member who was subsequently charged with several gun violations.
But police said they could not confirm a published report that said officers at the scene found 31 spent shell casings near the school. School was in session at the time, but no one was hurt.
The teen was found in possession of a handgun in the vicinity of the Songhai Learning Institute, 11725 S. Perry Ave., police said. He was charged with unlawful use of a firearm by a street gang member, possession of a stolen firearm and failure to have a FOID card and gun permit.
Two other suspects in the teen's company also were charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct. One was a 15-year-old. The other was Joseph Weatherspoon, 21, of the 5200 block of West Adams Street, whom police described as a convicted felon.
Police said that officers who arrived on the scene about 2:30 p.m. saw the first 15-year-old with a gun in his hand along with the other two suspects. As the officers approached, all three ran. The teen with the gun was arrested after a short foot chase, and a fully loaded 9mm handgun was recovered, police said.
Weatherspoon and the other teen were arrested a short time later, police said.
