A year after a 20-year-old knifeman admitted fatally stabbing a gang rival in Little Village, two of his teenage buddies have also been charged with playing a role in the murder.
Jonathan Lopez, 18, and Isaac Martinez, 17, were both ordered held on bail of $1 million Sunday, following a brief appearance before Judge James Brown.
The alleged Latin King gang members are accused of teaming up with Alex Gonzalez to kill 19-year-old Martin Cruz on Feb. 28 last year.
The trio chased Cruz after he made a sign to them indicating he was a member of the Two-Six street gang on the 3000 block of South Avers, assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Morgan Creppel said.
Both Lopez and Martinez stabbed Cruz, before Lopez dropped his knife and Gonzalez picked it up and stabbed Cruz as well, Creppel said.
As Cruz tried to escape, Lopez stopped a witness and demanded cash from him, while Gonzalez and Martinez caught up with Cruz and stabbed him multiple times on 31st St., the prosecutor alleged.
Police spotted Martinez and Gonzalez two blocks from the scene and caught a blood-covered Gonzalez, who confessed and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars last year, he added.
Martinez and Lopez were later identified by a witness whose home they fled to, also covered in blood, it’s alleged.
They were arrested this week and charged with first degree murder.
