Off-duty cop fatally shoots home intruder
FROM SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE Mar 29, 2011 11:35A An off-duty Chicago Police officer fatally shot a man who tried to break into the officer’s Far South Side Roseland neighborhood home Tuesday morning.
Just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, an intruder armed with a weapon entered the home of an off-duty officer in the 10000 block of South Princeton Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
“The intruder attempted to attack the officer who, in fear for his left, shot the suspect,” Mirabelli said.
The suspect, who was armed with some type of cutting instrument, according to preliminary information, was “very critically” injured, Mirabelli said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but had no further information as of 9:40 a.m.
The officer was not injured, Mirabelli said. Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
