Bail was set today at $700,000 for a man charged in a May 2012 hit-and-run crash that killed a 13-year-old West Side girl.
Ronald J. Tenard, 25, has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI in the death of Sade McGee, who died after a May 31, 2012 crash in the 5600 block of West Washington Boulevard. Prosecutors say Tenard was high on PCP at the time of the crash.
Tenard, of the 0-100 block of North Lotus Avenue, appeared in bond court at midday where the $700,000 bail was set.
The 1993 Buick LeSabre Sade was in was pulling away from a light at Central Avenue and Washington Boulevard, making a turn onto Central about 8:45 p.m. May 31, 2012 when a 1998 Mercury Sable rear-ended it at high speed, sending it into a fence, police and prosecutors said.
The Mercury then hit a parked car and Tenard, who was driving, and a passenger both jumped through the driver's side window and ran away before being taken into custody nearby.
According to a police report, an investigative alert had been issued with probable cause to arrest Tenard because he had been positively identified through DNA evidence as the driver of the vehicle that struck the car Sade was in, killing her.
Sade, of the 5300 block of West Harrison Street, was declared dead at 2:20 p.m. June 1, 2012 at John H. Stroger Hospital.
An autopsy on June 2, 2012 determined Sade died of multiple injuries from a motor vehicle collision and her death was ruled an accident.
Two other people in the car with her -- a man and a woman, both 18 -- were taken in good condition to Stroger.
Following the accident, investigators tested Tenard with a DUI kit, which later indicated he had both PCP and cannabinoids -- substances indicating the use of marijuana in his system.
Tenard, who was on parole in a 2010 aggravated unlawful use of a weapon case at the time of the crash, was not immediately charged, Simonton noted, but was sent back to prison until September 2012 because of the parole violation. In the meantime, DNA testing was done on the driver's and passenger side airbags in the Mercury, eventually showing Tenard's DNA on the driver's side and the other man's on the passenger side.
The investigative alert for Tenard in connection with the hit-and-run was issued on June 5, and he was arrested a few days ago.
