3 arrested after carjacked van stopped remotely by owner
Three men who carjacked a van early this morning on the West Side were caught after the owner of the vehicle used a remote device to cut off its ignition, police said.
The three were being questioned by Harrison Area detectives following the hijacking of the van in the 600 block of South Independence Boulevard about 12:15 a.m..
The men came up to the van, a grey-over-green 1997 Chevrolet van, and stole it at gunpoint, forcing eight people -- including the owner -- out at a gas station. The robbers took off. headed toward an eastbound ramp of the Eisenhower Expressway.
One of the victims, apparently the owner, flagged down police, who broadcast information about the suspects.
The owner told the officers he could stop the van remotely, and as the descriptions were broadcast, he did so.
Responding officers located the van, with one suspect inside, stalled out near 3300 west on the Eisenhower,.
Officers saw another man running from the van, and saw him jump into an open passenger window of a white vehicle that was headed off the expressway, according to a police report. Officers broadcast the description of the two suspects in the car, and other officers caught them nearby.
The eight victims were able to identify the three robbers in lineups, police said.
