Suspect in boy's beating implicated by fellow gang members (Tale of Chicago's brutal minority underclass)

As 14-year-old Brian DeLeon lay crumpled on the ground in the Logan Square neighborhood one week ago, three Maniac Latin Disciples gang members yelled to Esteban Miranda to stop wielding a baseball bat against the boy's head and body.
But instead of stopping, Miranda, 19, who was implicated by fellow gang members, continued beating DeLeon only steps from the Yates Elementary School playground across where DeLeon took a short cut as he walked home from his girlfriend's home.
"The others were yelling, 'He's a Neutron (Slang for a non-gang member), stop hitting him.' He wouldn't listen," according to the source. "The other three felt bad for the kid they knew he wasn't a gang member."
Miranda, of the 1600 block of North Maplewood Avenue, is set to appear in court this morning, where he faces one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery, authorities said.
Police said that Miranda brutally beat and left for dead DeLeon, a Phoenix Military Academy freshman, near Yates Elementary School. The boy remains in a coma at Children's Memorial Hospital.
Miranda, who police said is a member of the same gang as the other men with him that night, were cruising on Sept. 13 in a Geo Prism belonging to Miranda's sister. Their object that night was to beat up a member of their rival gang, the Spanish Cobras, with whom they have been having a heated rivalry.
Instead, they came upon DeLeon who the men in the car, including Miranda, knew was not gang affiliated.
Miranda allegedly beat the boy and left him on the ground, stealing the boy's cell phone. The boy had just missed a call from his girlfriend Dayana Vazquez, who had called him after the boy failed to notify her when he made it back to his home as was their routine, the source said. While they were driving, Miranda then called back the last number received on the telephone.
"He dialed the last number and it goes into voice mail, he yells, 'YLo Cobra Killa' B---h,''' according to the source, adding that it referred to a local faction of the Spanish Cobras known to frequent the area.
While police were never able to locate the phone, they were able to pull the voice mail message from the girl's phone as evidence. The girl told the Tribune last week that she heard the words "Cobra Killa','' and heard music.
Miranda was charged with robbery, a class X felony, because he stole the boy's phone. The car was also located nearby and inside police found the baseball bat
While Miranda had a lawyer and chose not to say anything to police, the other three men -- who are between 19 and 22 -- provided statements to the police implicating Miranda. Miranda was arrested on Sunday along with one of the other men and the remaining two were arrested on Monday.
News of the beating sent shockwaves through the community and spurred Yates Principal Harry Randell to invite parents and police to discuss safety around the Logan Square school.
Police said they received a single tip from the public which wrongly implicated an African-American member of the Latin Kings who was not involved.
Miranda is well known to police. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and was sentenced to serve in the Cook County sheriff's boot camp, according to court records. The sentence ran concurrently with a aggravated DUI conviction from the previous year.
The most important leads came from the gangs themselves, police said. Investigators spoke with members of the Spanish Cobras, who put the blame on the Maniac Latin Disciples, with whom they said they are having current gang tensions. Members of the Maniac Latin Disciples implicated Miranda as well as the other three men with Miranda that evening.

Humboldt Park attack leaves boy, 14, on life support

A 14-year-old boy was bludgeoned in the head Tuesday night while walking home from studying with his girlfriend in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
He is on life support early Wednesday at Children’s Memorial Hospital.
It happened about 9:15 p.m. at 2930 W. Bloomingdale Ave., according to Shakespeare District police Capt. Marc Buslik.
The boy and the 14-year-old girl had been at his home doing their homework prior to the incident. After studying, he walked her to her home located a few blocks away. They walked her dog for a while before he left, but they two stayed on the phone until she heard “some kind of commotion and then nothing,” according to Buslik.
She became worried and went out to look for him and discovered him lying on the ground unconscious, bleeding from the head, said Buslik. She called 911, and authorities initially thought he had been shot. Paramedics rushed him to Children’s Memorial Hospital where he is on life support early Wednesday, the captain said.
BEAT 1421
Doctors said the boy has a “silver dollar sized” hole in his head from being hit with either a bat or a sledgehammer, the captain said.
The boy attends Phoenix Military Academy and is not involved with gangs. Police have no idea why he was targeted, and nothing was taken from him, Buslik said.
No weapon was found and nothing was taken from the child.
“He is a straight kid,” said Buslik of the victim. “It appears he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s a real shame.”

Man facing murder charge arrested in Rainbow Beach beating

A man free on bail and awaiting trial in the 2008 slaying of a 10-year-old girl was arrested today on charges he and eight other people beat someone he thought was taking pictures of his girlfriend Sunday at a South Side beach, authorities said.

Luis Peña, 23, faces murder charges with three other men in the shooting of Nequiel Fowler, known to family as Nee-Nee, as she helped her 5-year-old blind sister walk through an alley on Sept. 1, 2008.
After being charged with misdemeanors in what police say was a 10 p.m. Sunday attack in the parking lot of Rainbow Beach, Peña was arrested today after a status hearing on the murder case and is being charged with armed robbery, said his attorney, Steven Greenberg.

“I find it awfully odd that he was charged with misdemeanors, and now he’s been arrested on a felony,” Greenberg said today.

Peña originally was charged with battery, theft, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault and possession of marijuana, police said.

Pena was at the Rainbow Beach parking lot, 3111 E. 77th St., Sunday evening, when Peña showed a man a handgun as he asked if the man had been taking pictures of Peña’s girlfriend, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien. Peña asked several people who were with him to take the man’s cell phone from him, and he and the others began punching and kicking the man, O’Brien said.

At some point, police officers arrived at the parking lot and saw the group that had attacked the man trying to leave, police said. Police stopped Peña and the others, and when the officers talked to the man, he told them Peña had held the gun on him as Peña told the others with him to get the man’s cell phone. Details on the other eight people arrested were not available.

Peña was in police custody this afternoon, Greenberg said.

Prosecutors allege Nequiel’s shooting came after Peña told a man he is now scheduled to be tried with, Antoine Lacy, that he wanted to shoot rival gang members.

Peña used a gun given to him by one of two other men charged with Nequiel’s murder to spray an alley in the 8700 block of South Escanaba with bullets to try to shoot members of the Latin Kings, just as Nequiel was tying her sister’s shoes in the alley.

Nequiel had been set to start school the next day. Her sister did not realize she had been shot. Peña originally had been held without bail in the case, but has been free since after he had his bond reduced in April 2009, according to prosecutors and court records. Peña has a tentative trial date of Nov. 14, and is due back in court on the murder charge on Sept. 26, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Peña has denied, through his attorney, that he shot Nequiel. Also charged with murder in the case are Joseph Chico and Raymond Jones, but they are scheduled to be tried separately.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE GHETTO WILDING AND CHICAGO'S NEW MEDIA (FROM A WEST VIRGINIA NEWSPAPER COLUMNIST)

Paternalistic journalismThe truth? You can’t handle the truth, the editor of the Chicago Tribune tells readers.
Flash mobs of black youths are holding mini-riots in Chicago.
The Chicago Tribune won’t tell readers the color of the gangs.
From Gerould Kern, editor of the Chicago Tribune: “This week the Chicago Tribune published several news stories and related columns about assaults by groups of youths in the Streeterville area of downtown Chicago. More coverage appears Sunday. A number of readers have asked why we have not included racial descriptions of the assailants and the victims in these incidents. We take these matters seriously and reach decisions about them after careful consideration. This is a good opportunity to explain our approach to issues like these. We do not reference race unless it is a fact that is central to telling the story. By all indication, these attacks were motivated by theft, not race. Further, there is no evidence to suggest that the victims were singled out because of their race. Therefore we did not include racial descriptions in our initial news reports.”
Nothing to see here citizen.
Move along.
The Chicago Tribune cannot trust its readers.
Why if the readers found out the gangs were black people, why who knows what might happen.
Someone might get hurt.
So the editor of the Chicago Tribune decided that race is not a motivation.
Move along.
If gangs of white kids beat up a black man, you would have a hate crime.
Don’t take my word for it.
Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass wrote: “I explained to him that when it comes to race and crime, the Chicago media deal with the comfortable. We’re comfortable dealing with black-on-black crime and white-on-white crime. The race cards are moot. And we’re experienced in dealing with black victims of white racists. We’re so well-trained that we’ll rush out and grab the usual suspects, including race-card-playing clergy, and ask them to put it in context. But when black teens go after whites and Asians in a plush neighborhood, it creates headaches, in the media and in politics.”
And heaven forbid the Chicago Tribune should give Editor Gerould Kern a headache because it published the facts.
But John Kass defended not mentioning the color — because it might make things uncomfortable for James Chalmers, 21, when he goes to a white neighborhood. Yes, Chicago is segregated — or as John Kass put it, Chicago is a city of tribes.
So John Kass used this James Chalmers fellow (“And we might as well get this over with. Chalmers is black.,” Kass wrote) to rationalize his newspaper deliberately withholding information.

From John Kass:
“People see me, see I’m an African-American male, so people look at me thinking I’ve got to be from some nation or some gang,” he said.
Are you?
“No. It’s the stereotype. It happens all the time.”
Chalmers doesn’t live in a theme park. Every day after work, he leaves Daleyland and goes home, to Chicago.
Oh good gravy. More paternalistic journalism. The sins of only mentioning black people when they are in crime stories has been replaced by never identifying black people in crime stories.
This puts the life of James Chalmers in jeopardy because he is 1. black 2. male 3. 18-25.
That is the prime target of black violence.
And by mollycoddling black criminals we put people like James Chalmers in jeopardy.
We have had equal rights for nearly 50 years. The affirmative action programs have been around for 2 generations. And still the black homicide rate is 4 timees thw white rate?
Obviously something is not working.
It is time to deal with the race maturely. Black on black crime is a major problem. The best way to protect James Chalmers is not to guilt-trip merchants into not stereotyping him but to get rid of the black gangs that they should fear.
Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.
Two other Chicago Tribune columnists also assured the public that race is not the problem and that if their newspaper dared to mention race, its readers would jump to conclusions.
Loony.
Plain loony.
I pity Chicago if this passes for wisdom.
Some advice for James Chalmers. Move. Chicago will remain a death trap for young black males until it deals with the black criminals in an adult manner.
