A teenager six months pregnant was shot and killed on a street in the Marquette Park neighborhood late Tuesday, but doctors were able to save her baby.
The teen, identified this morning by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Charinez Jefferson, 17, of the 600 block of South Albany Ave., was walking with a group of friends on the 3000 block of W. 64th Street at 10:35 p.m. when a male gunman got out of a car and ran at the group.
"One of them yelled, 'He's got a got a gun,' and everyone scattered. Jefferson was found moments later lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to her body and one shot to her head.
She was put on advanced life support equipment in an ambulance and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. At the same time, paramedics worked to save the baby.
Jefferson was declared dead at 11:11 p.m. at the hospital, but doctors at Christ saved the baby.
