Boy in custody in South Side school shooting

A boy was being questioned by police tonight in connection with the shooting this afternoon of another youth who was walking out of a South Side elementary school, police sources said.
The shooting took place at about 2:45 p.m. at Cook Elementary School, 8150 S. Bishop Ave. The victim, a 12-year-old boy, was shot in the back and rushed to a hospital in serious condition, police said.
A source said the boy suspected in the shooting formerly attended the school. Witnesses told police he approached a crowd in front of the building and fired a gun four times.
Chicago Police Cmdr. Eddie Johnson said at the scene this afternoon that though there were other students in the area, they believe that the victim was targeted.
After he was shot, the victim was able to get back into the school to seek help. The victim is a 7th-grade student at Cook, according to Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond.
No charges have been filed against the boy in custody, authorities said. They said police were looking into whether that boy had previously made threats against the victim on Facebook.
Neighbors said they feel the shooting should prompt more monitoring of students and better safety measures.
"We need to get some parents out here. It takes a village to raise a kid," said Mojia Mitchell, who lives across the street from the main entrance and has three children at the school. "It's scary. Bullets don't have no names."
"We need more officers out here patrolling our schools and our kids," said Paul Johnson, also of the 8100 block of South Bishop Street. "We have to let the world know about gun violence in our neighborhood."
