A 14-year-old boy has been charged with fatally shooting a boy 1 year older in what may have been an internal gang conflict in the Washington Park neighborhood.
The teen was cited in a delinquency petition in connection with the Monday afternoon shooting death of Steven McGee, 15.
A witness identified the 14-year-old boy as the triggerman who fired several shots at McGee in the 6000 block of South Prairie Avenue at about 5:50 p.m. Monday, according to police. Officers arrested the boy at his home, just two blocks from McGee's South Side home.
Police believe the shooting was spurred by an internal gang conflict. The Washington Park neighborhood and the adjacent Woodlawn neighborhood have been marked by gang rivalries and have been the scene of several recent shootings, including one just two blocks from where McGee was shot.
McGee was walking on Prairie Avenue when a man passing by on a bicycle warned that "guys with guns" had gathered in a nearby alley.
Then one or two people emerged from the alley and opened fire, hitting McGee in the head and upper body.
McGee was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later in the evening. McGee was an 8th-grade student at Ross Elementary School, according to Chicago Public Schools.
