An armed robbery erupted into gunfire at a Gresham neighborhood liquor store, with a robber shot dead while struggling with a clerk, who then was seriously wounded by the robber's partner.
Two armed robbers approached the store in the 1300 block of West 87th Street around 10 p.m. Thursday, according to police, citing preliminary information. One of the robbers went inside and grabbed cash from the register.
The second robber stayed outside, where he was spotted by another clerk, police said. The two struggled and the robber's gun went away, killing the robber.
The first robber then shot the clerk and fled.
The clerk, 30, was wounded in the stomach and taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where detectives were interviewing him. The employee's condition has improved and stabilized.
The Cook County medical examiner's office said the dead man, estimated to be in his 40s, had not yet been identified.
