A man is in custody after he allegedly fled downstate Mount Carmel, with his young niece and was found with a stolen van in downtown Chicago this afternoon, officials said.
The man, 48-years-old and the 4-year-old girl were found after their disappearance triggered an alert today that the two were last seen in a 1998 White Chevy conversion van, said Illinois State Police Spokeswoman Monique Bond.
Officials eventually found the van near the intersection of Stetson Avenue and South Water Street, shortly after 2 p.m., said Bond.
While the van appeared to be abandoned at that location, police were able to find the man, who is a cousin of the girl's father, and the girl nearby, officials said.
