Chicago police today released a sketch of a man who tried to abduct an 18-month-old girl while her family celebrated Independence Day at a Far North Side beach.
The girl was walking with her family about 8:45 p.m. on July 4 at Pratt Beach Park, 1050 W. Pratt Blvd., along concrete blocks near the beach, according to a community alert from Belmont Area detectives. As the girl and her mother walked past a man, he picked the girl up and “tucked her under his arm like a football and tried to walk away,” according to the alert.
The mother stopped the man, who told her “he thought that the child belonged to another family,” according to the alert.
Police described the man as black, about 5-foot-10, and weighing about 210 pounds. He had a
“very noticeable gap” between his two upper front teeth, according to the alert. When seen on July 4, the man was wearing a dark blue Cubs baseball hat with the letter "C" on the front, a gray t-Shirt, navy shorts made of swimming trunk material and white gym shoes.
The composite sketch also shows the man wearing glasses.
Anyone with information about the man or the attempted abduction is asked to call Belmont Area detectives at (312) 744-8266.
