The shooting happened about 4:32 p.m. on the 3100 block of West Peterson Avenue, police said.
Preliminary reports stated two teens, 15 and 16, were walking with a group when they encountered another group and began arguing. Someone in the second group pulled out a gun and fired, striking both of the victims, police said.
The 15-year-old, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Sergio Torrez of the 6700 block of North Maplewood Avenue, suffered a wound to his upper back and was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston.
The second youth, 16, suffered a wound to his arm.
UPDATE: Des Plaines man charged with killing. A 19-year-old Des Plaines man was denied bail today after he was charged with killing one 15-year-old boy and wounding another one in a shooting that began when a North Side crowd ignored his flashing of a gang sign.
James Galambos, of the 900 block of Beau Drive, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the shooting that killed Sergio Torres of Chicago’s West Ridge neighborhood. The other victim, a 15-year-old Evanston boy, was shot under his right arm but survived.
On that afternoon, Galambos encountered a group of people that included Torres and the other victim. Galambos demanded to know what gang the group’s members belonged to and then flashed a gang sign, court documents state. When no one responded, Galambos pulled out a handgun and fired into the group, striking the two teens.

I am in this park daily at 6 am and after midnight w/my dog. Ths is sick that a child cant make it out of the park w/out getting shot. His flower memorial rests on the fountain w/his picture. I dont understand no arrests. I was there at 4:30 and the motel next door on Lincoln was surrounded by 10 police cars, undercover and arrests were being made. What gives? Something here is being ommited. And damn the kids who who shot this child and the parents that didnt do enough to keep their kids from becoming violent disrespectful members of society.

It just so happens that at the time of the shooting i was pulling out of the drive through of the mcdonalds right there next to the park i seen all of these teens running and new they were up to no good. it so sad that such young kids waste their lives away and probably over something so stupid.
