A clerk at an Englewood neighborhood convenience store was shot and killed Saturday night in what was suspected to be an armed robbery, officials said this morning.
The 48-year-old store employee was shot in the back inside Max's Food Mart in the 1100 block of West Garfield Boulevard at about 8 p.m., police said.
The man was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, but later died, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The man hadn't been identified as of 1:40 a.m., an office spokesman said. An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
While police initially believed the shooting may have occurred during a robbery, it wasn't immediately clear that a robbery had taken place, according to a police source.
Preliminary reports said four teens were seen fleeing the scene, but police didn't have a detailed description of the gunman.
