Two men were struck and killed by an outbound Metra train late Monday near Cicero, officials said this morning.
The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe line train was en route to Aurora when it struck the two men at about 11:50 p.m., just east of the Cicero station, according to Metra officials and Chicago police.
A 30-year-old man was dead at the scene, while the second man, 53, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he later died, said police spokesman Officer Ron Gaines.
Police had searched the area around the railroad tracks for a possible third victim, but found nothing, Gaines said.
Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the collision occurred on railway property and not at a crossing.
Train 1299, which had been scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 12:55 a.m., was stopped at the scene for at least an hour so that authorities could investigate. The train was eventually canceled and passengers were put on the next train, arriving in Aurora an hour late, Gillis said.
