One man was fatally shot and a second was critically wounded this afternoon in the city’s Avondale neighborhood, police said.
The victims were in the area of the 3000 block of North California Avenue when they were shot at about 1:50 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer.
Both victims -- a 22-year-old man shot in the head and a 21-year-old man shot in the chest -- were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
The 21-year-old victim, identified as Jesus Gamboa of the 2900 block of North Washtenaw Avenue -- was later pronounced dead there, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
In preliminary reports there was some confusion regarding the victims, initially reported as both men before the younger victim was reported being female. Police later said that both victims were indeed men.
Police believe the shooting was gang-related, Dwyer said, although she could not provide additional details.
