A man has been charged in connection with the May slaying of a 22-year-old man on
the South Side in the city's Gresham neighborhood.
Kato Ware, 19, of the 1500 block of West 71st Street was charged with one
count of murder in the slaying of Sidney McDowell.
McDowell, 22, of the 7900 block of South Laflin Street, was walking near his
home when a SUV pulled up. One of the occupants of the vehicle, later identified
as Ware, exited the SUV, pulled out a handgun and shot McDowell in the chest at
close range
Ware got back in the SUV, and the vehicle fled southbound on Laflin Street.
McDowell was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
Ware was found guilty of attempted armed-robbery in January of 2011 and
sentenced to two years of probation. He was later sentenced to one year in
prison for an August 2011 conviction for possession of a controlled substance
but was given credit for time served at Cook County Jail.
