An 8-month-old boy drowned in a tub earlier this week after his father left
him in the bath with his older brother and went to smoke a cigarette.
The father, Willie Strong, 30, was charged with child endangerment.
Prosecutors said the child, Jayshaun Strong, and his 2-year-old brother were
left in Willie Strong’s care in the 6300 block of South King Drive in the
Parkway Gardens neighborhood on Monday when their mother left for school about
8:30 a.m.
When the mother came home from school about 3:30 p.m., Strong was in the
living room on the computer. She went to use the bathroom and
discovered the children in a water-filled tub. Jayshaun was floating face-up
with his eyes open.
The mother immediately started CPR and called 911. Jayshaun was taken to The
University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at
3:44 p.m..
In an interview with police, Strong said he put the children in the bath “and
left them alone for about 10 minutes while he went to the living room to smoke a
cigarette”.
The tub was filled with 6 inches of water.
The baby’s death prompted fresh abuse allegations against Strong, who was
investigated for allegedly abusing the same child in June, said Illinois
Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Jimmie Whitelow.
