Police said Armando Gutierrez, 25, lied about the incident and was then charged with felony disorderly conduct for lying to police and violating his parole.
Police were looking to charge him with unlawful use of a weapon but couldn't find his gun, according to a department source.
Gutierrez told responding officers someone shot at him from across the street while he was standing near his home on the 1000 block of North Christiana Avenue about 8 p.m.
He was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he changed his story and told police he accidentally shot himself.
He was arrested and taken into custody after being treated for his wound and is expected in bond court Saturday.
Gutierrez was previously convicted for unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member and sentenced to three years in prison on July 16, 2010, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.
He was paroled on Sept. 23, 2011, according to IDOC
