Four teenagers disabled a CTA bus and boarded it before beating and robbing people Saturday night, prosecutors said Sunday in bond court.
Darius Love and Anthony Williams, both 17, were among four youths who allegedly disabled the bus about 7 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of East 71st Street by using a control switch on the bus’s exterior.The teens “were able to hit that switch,” causing the bus to stop and the lights to go out, prosecutors said.
CTA spokeswoman Molly Sullivan said the transit authority is investigating, but she declined to comment about whether CTA buses can be disabled from the exterior.
“We do not have any details about that at this time,” Sullivan said. “We are investigating the whole situation.”
Once aboard the bus, Love and Williams attacked a passenger, stealing an iPhone, a watch and $7 before leaving, according to prosecutors. Police and prosecutors also said the driver was attacked
The teens were arrested by officers with the Grand Crossing District tactical unit. A 43-year-old witness on the bus was able to identify all four suspects, police said.
Love, of the 700 block of East 90th Place, is charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor battery. Williams, of the 7200 block of South Evans Avenue, is charged with attempted robbery and battery.
Williams was one of four teenage boys injured by gunfire in October while they sat on a porch outside the apartment building where he lives.He was wounded in the hand.
In the bus attack, two 13-year-old boys were charged with misdemeanor battery. They have not been identified because they are juveniles.
Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil ordered Love and Williams each held on $150,000 bond. They are scheduled to appear in court Friday.
