A neighbor of a 56-year-old man found beaten to death in his Gladstone Park neighborhood home has been charged with his murder.
Daniel Tyler, 34, also faces three charges related to an incident while he was being treated for self-inflicted wounds at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center while in police custody.
Tyler cut a medical staff member and then hit and tried to disarm a police officer while at the hospital, police said. The medical staff member required stitches but couldn't provide more details about the victim.
Police didn’t whether Tyler was restrained when he allegedly attacked the officer and medical staff member, whose laceration required stitches.
Tyler lives on the same block as Justo, whom police found with massive head trauma at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home on the 5300 block of North Northwest Highway.
Police had received a call from Justo's wife saying a burglary had happened at the home earlier in the day, and that when she returned to the home about 5:30 p.m., a back door was open and Justo's vehicle was missing, according to a police report. Officers came to the scene and found Justo in the home's basement.
A bat and a hammer may have been used in the attack, the source said. Justo's vehicle was discovered missing from his home, but later recovered, police said.
Authorities are investigating the possibility that Justo, a former city worker who lived in the neighborhood for decades, may have been slain during a home invasion.
An autopsy Thursday concluded he died of multiple injuries from an assault.
