A 27-year-old South Carolina man leapt to his death from a North Side apartment building after police were called there for a well-being check.
The man leapt from a 12th-floor window of the building in the 2700 block of North Pine Grove Avenue at about 8:24 p.m. Wednesday.
When police officers arrived to check on a woman who lived there, the woman told them through the door that she was fine.
But when the officers asked the woman to open the door so that they could see her, they said the man inside bolted for a window and jumped out, breaking a tree branch in his fall.
The woman then opened her door, telling the officers "He just went out the window,".
The man, identified as a Myrtle Beach, S.Car., resident, was dead at the scene.
Authorities later determined that the man arrived in town over the weekend to visit relatives, including his grandmother, who lives at the Pine Grove home.
The man's relatives told police that the man suffered from bipolar disorder and was on medication, but police were unsure whether he was taking it.
The man's grandmother had minor injuries, but wasn't taken to the hospital.
Police are conducting a death investigation, but will await results of an autopsy scheduled for later today to confirm that the death was a suicide
