Chicago police shot and wounded a man who reportedly brandished kitchen knives at officers in the Cragin neighborhood, officials said this morning.
The shooting happened at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday in the 2900 block of North Lotus Avenue, police said. There were conflicting reports that said the shooting happened in the 3000 block of North Lotus.
Officers were called to assist fire department paramedics who were confronted by a knife-wielding man on the street, police said in a statement.
The technicians were trying to treat the visibly-bleeding man, who initially refused to show them his hands, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents the department's rank-and-file. The officers repeatedly demanded that the man show them his hands, which he kept concealed behind his back, Camden said.

When the man finally revealed his hands, he was holding a steak knife and a carving knife, according to Camden. After the man refused several commands from officers to drop the knives, one of the officers shot the man when he advanced on them, according to police and Camden.
The wounded man remained combative and was tasered by officers, who then took him into custody.
Police said they recovered a weapon at the scene, but a police spokesman couldn't say whether one or two knives were found.
The man was taken to a Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was being treated for a non-serious wound, Camden said. No other injuries were reported.
Afterwards, police discovered that the man stabbed a female prior to the officers' arrival. She was also hospitalized with non life threatening injuries, police said.
Officials with the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police-involved shootings, had been dispatched to the scene and at the hospitals, said Andrea Stoutenborough, IPRA's coordinator of investigations.
She confirmed that they were investigating the shooting of a knife-wielding man, but couldn't provide any other details.
