An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a man who came at him after the officer stopped for what he thought was a traffic accident.
The officer was riding in an unmarked police car at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when he spotted what he thought was a two-vehicle accident in the 4400 block of West Armitage Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side.The officer stopped his car and turned on his emergency equipment to investigate, police said. A man in one of the other vehicles got out and ran toward the officer's car, police said.
"You got a (expletive) problem?" the man asked the officer, who was still sitting in his car, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police. The officer responded that he was a cop, Camden said.
Police said the man opened the door of the police car and "lunged inside," with one of his hands concealed in his waistband. The officer ordered the man to take his hand from his waistband.
After refusing the officer's orders, the officer pulled his handgun and opened fire, striking the man.
No gun was found on the man, Camden said.
The man, 38, was taken to a hospital but his injuries were not considered serious, Camden said. The officer wasn't injured.
