A man with a record of drug and weapons convictions has been charged with trying to kill two Chicago police officers in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, authorities said this morning.
Daniel Jones, 27, whose last known address was in the 600 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, said Sally Daly, a Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokeswoman.
The officers, both 29 and assigned to the Harrison District on the West Side, were on patrol in their squad car when they drove by an alley near Wilcox Street and Karlov Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Monday and saw what appeared to be a drug deal between two people, police have said.
When the officers went to intervene, one of the two people they saw disappeared while the other was still there. As the officers went to question him, he pulled a gun from his waistband and opened fire, police have said.
Both officers were taken to Stroger Hospital. One of them suffered a wound to the bicep and a graze wound to the head, while the other was shot behind his left ear.
