Stolen car found with 1-year-old safe in back seat

A 1-year-old boy was found safe in the back seat of a car two hours after it was hijacked at gunpoint in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, police say.

"They kicked us out of the car and drove off with the car," said the boy's mother, Angela Moffett, 21, as she nervously waited for word from police about her son, Jeremiah.

Around 6:30 a.m., officers told her Jeremiah had been found safe and took her to where the car had been abandoned, about two blocks from where it was stolen. Moffett hugged her son and cried as officers escorted her to a hospital to have the baby checked out.

Moffett said she had just finished work at the Old Country Buffet and stopped near a park near 71st and Calumet with Jeremiah in the back seat, sleeping.

"Basically, we were in the car and some dudes walked up and just basically robbed us, basically pulled a gun out on us, told us to get out of the car and give us all our money," Moffett said.

The 2001 black Hyundyai was found next to a garage in an alley in the 500 block of East 70th Street. Police believe the carjackers realized there was a baby inside and ditched the car.
