Chicago police today warned the public about a recent spate of at least 10 break-ins to parked cars in lakefront parking lots on the North Side.
The incidents occurred within the last month on the lakefront between Addison and Foster avenues, with a high concentration in the lots near Montrose Harbor, police said.
"Offenders have been operating along the lakefront, breaking into victims' vehicles and taking any property they can locate," a police crime alert said. "If any of the victims' credit cards are found during the break-ins, the cards are used immediately before being tossed."
Thieves have rifled through glove compartments and gotten access to trunks of cars through back seats, according to the alert.
Police advised visitors to the lakefront to lock their car doors, carry identification and credit cards on their persons, and secure any valuables.
Anyone with information about the thefts was asked to call Belmont Area detectives at 312-744-8263.
