Thieves scared off while trying to steal ATM

Police answering an alarm on the Northwest Side came upon a fresh crime scene this morning: An idling truck and an ATM that had been pulled off its foundation but not yet loaded onto a waiting trailer.
Officers apparently scared off the robbers when they pulled up in the 2100 block of North Elston Avenue around 4:30 a.m.
The idling truck was a rental that had been stolen sometime overnight. A side window was broken and the ignition had been punched to start the truck.
The ATM had been pulled off a concrete foundation and was sitting on the sidewalk, near a trailer hitched to the truck.
No one was in custody this morning.
