Charges in police shooting incident on NW Side

Two men have been charged with felonies in connection with a police-involved shooting early Monday morning in the Northwest Side's Hermosa neighborhood, police said today.
Jonathan Peña, 20, of the 3400 block of West North Ave., was accused of pointing a gun at an officer and charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a gang member and theft of lost or mislaid property, police said in a statement.
Sylvester Jimenez, 28, of the 1000 block of North Spaulding Avenue, was charged with fleeing police and cited for various traffic violations, including failure to stop at a stop sign and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
The incident happened at about 1:15 a.m. Monday when Grand Central gang officers near Keeler and Armitage avenues saw a man point a handgun from a vehicle in the direction of another group of people.
The car drove off but was later stopped on the 2000 block of North Kostner Avenue, police said. A man later identified as Peña exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at the officers, police said.
He then fled the scene and officers chased him on foot into a nearby yard, where he again pointed a weapon at the officers, police said. Officers then opened fire, striking Peña. A gun was recovered from the scene, police said.
Peña remained at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center today, police said. Information on his condition was not immediately available
